Distortion either emphasizes or conceals. Clarity on the other hand can only emphasize. Precision often gets a bum rap because creative is often synonymous with messy. It can be unjustifiably interpreted as cold or aloof. Instances play the crucial role of peddling doubt in the face of generalization. Instances such as the creative output of one Auks Jedan.
Auks Jedan makes a habit of pristinely separating monotone slabs of color with sharp lines. In these situations a certain amount of coldness is expected. The effect is however anything but clinical. The resulting shapes, figures, flora and fauna are emitting kilojoules of warmth. They are calming and welcoming. The seemingly free-floating placid elements are connected and sunder at the same time. The scenes are contained and calm. Nothing sudden ever happens here and the pace, if any, is glacial.
The pieces and compositions at times have ornamental qualities that evoke sentiments of places further east of Greenwich. Auks creates structures using mono-colored panes, arranged to create a warm dynamic. Other examples have him meticulously drawing lines to create a tapestry of simple detail repeated to create a tactile effect.
When he is not engaged in building repetitive forms and ornaments he’s inspired by the organic world. Logs sprouting new life, leaves, hot dogs, skulls, wheat and hybrid creatures. It all has a mystic and mythological feel about it. The content is familiar but perhaps undecipherable. The work can be viewed as symbolical or alchemical. No direct meaning is given and the elements are up for speculation and interpretation. Any reached conclusion is as valid as the next. Auks’ favorite character and muse, which is found in most of his works and collaborations, is the smiling entity observers have labeled as angel, woman, nun and even ham. The figure is cradled in its own gown and, depending on the context and detail, can be viewed as both young (girl) and old (woman). Its origin and role is unclear but given the generous smile this recurring image gives of an aura of a wonderful queen that gleefully enjoys her own cloak and surroundings.
All of the mentioned composition elements are part of a psychedelic realm. However, the psychedelia is not a maddening one. It’s inviting and inclusive. It engulfs you with a warm embrace soothing and comforting. The colorful, childlike playfulness melts away inhibitions and trips you down mellow lane.
While all graffiti may be considered wall art and not all wall art can be considered graffiti you can consider Auks Jedan as both graffiti and wall artist. His graffiti production is similar to his wall art; colors contained within clearcut lines, although, modestly retouched with additional shading. On the street, where colors and lines get dirtied and blurred, Auks Jedan will give you a good reference point of clarity and harmony among the rubble and discord of modern life.
